Interventions for orphans and vulnerable children at four project sites in South Africa

This report describes interventions for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) at four sites in South Africa. The project sites are the Rustenburg and Orkney areas in the North West province, and the Kopanong and Matjhabeng municipalities in the Free State. The report highlights the knowledge, attitudes, practices, prevention, care and support issues concerning HIV/AIDS among the people located in these 4 areas.

Professor Geoffrey Setswe is a chief research specialist in the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health research programme of the HSRC. Before joining the HSRC in January 2006, he was professor and head of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the National School of Public Health, University of Limpopo. Before this, he was the founding director of the AIDS Research Institute at Wits University, where he coordinated AIDS research. He has also worked for 12 years in the occupational health services of the Impala Platinum Mines in Rustenburg.

Dr Donald Skinner is former chief research specialist in the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health research programme of the HSRC. He is currently based at the University of Stellenbosch.
