Biko’s Edge: Reimagining Black Critique

Biko’s Edge: Reimagining Black Critique

Professor Tendayi Sithole
This book dives deep into Steve Biko’s ideas, showing how truly original his thinking was and why that is still so important today. Instead of just focusing on what Black Consciousness is usually known for, the book explores new areas of Biko’s thought, especially through the concept of “generativity” – essentially, how his ideas can create new possibilities and understandings. The main point of the book is that Biko’s thinking helps us to “think on the edge,” pushing boundaries and challenging conventional wisdom. This is where the idea of Black critique comes in, showing how Biko’s work offers a powerful way to question the liberal consensus. The book explores this “edge” by looking at four specific themes through Biko’s lens: property, Radio Bantu, the idea of “the common” (shared resources or public space), and the archive. By examining these in detail, the book highlights the groundbreaking nature of Biko’s critique.

“Sithole frees Biko from the myth of being fixed in time –rendering his thought alive in the everyday. Biko’s Edge calls us toward self-determination, freedom, and the deep inner emergence of black strength. In these pages, Biko’s radical spirit endures.”-Thabang Monoa, Senior Lecturer in the Art History Department, University of Cape Town
