Africa Human Genome Initiative Series This first research project deals with the Human Genome Project, humanity's genetic sequencing exercise. This extraordinary international project of biological science will add new and undo old knowledge about our evolution as a species. 'It is a controversial subject, and we thought we would start in two phases. Dr Jeff Lever's paper published here worries aloud whether we teach evolutionary theory properly and with sufficient depth to pupils and scholars at our schools.

Dr Jeffrey Lever is a consultant to the Africa Human Genome Initiative and a visiting fellow of the Department of Sociology, Rhodes University. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of South Africa and was a member of the departments of sociology at the universities of Stellenbosch, Cape Town and the Western Cape between 1976 and 1999.
