Trends and challenges The steadily increasing popularity of tourism in both developed and developing countries has led to an intriguing debate about its role in sustainable development. In this concise overview, Johan Viljoen begins by defining rural tourism and examining international trends in rural tourism development in both developed and developing contexts. Johan Viljoen is a researcher in the Urban, Rural and Economic Development research programme of the HSRC. He has a BA (Hons) degree in Geography from the University of Pretoria, and is currently enrolled for a MA degree at the University of South Africa.

Kholadi Tlabela has a MA-degree in International Communications and is currently a deputy director at the Department of Correctional Services.
