An Audit of HIV/AIDS Policies

In Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe Prior to this report, little scientific documentation existed on HIV/AIDS policies, legislation, financing and programme implementation in Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. This study reviews the HIV/AIDS policy and related issues in six southern African countries and provides recommendations on how best to strengthen policy in these areas.

Ms Nompumelelo Zungu-Dirwayi is a research specialist and a special assistant to the Director of the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA) cross-cutting unit. She obtained an MA in psychology from the University of Cape Town.

Dr Olive Shisana is the CEO of the Human Science Research Council. At the time of publication she was the executive director of the SAHARA research programme at the HSRC, where she headed a national programme and Africa-wide network on the SAHARA programme. She has also served as professor and head of department of Health Systems Management and Policy at the Medical University of Southern Africa.

At time of publication, Dr Eric Udjo was a research director in the epidemiology and demography unit of the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health (SAHA) research programme. He holds a doctorate in medical demography from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Dr Thabang Mosala was, at the time of this publication, a research specialist of the SAHARA research programme at the HSRC.

Professor John Seager is a research director in the Urban Rural and Economic Development (URED) research programme, where he leads the Human Development, Environment and Tourism sub-programme. He holds a BSc(Hons) in zoology and a PhD in ecology and population dynamics from the University of Wales. Prof. Seager is an honorary professor of public health at the University of the Western Cape.
