At a time when alarming numbers of people with HIV/AIDS seek help under cover of darkness, deeply ashamed of their plight, it is crucial to find ways to better comprehend and address the specific nature of stigma around HIV/AIDS in southern Africa.

Universal Service Agency telecentres were established to fulfill the 1996 Telecommunications Act aim of supplying low-cost, communication services to South Africa's townships and rural areas. This paper attributes the 30 per cent success rate since 1998 to the dedication of telecentre managers as it looks at the formidable challenges facing these centres.

A seminal study, The University in Development explores how the university is indeed 'in development': pursuing a new 'third' mission of external societal development (alongside its two existing missions of teaching and research), and experiencing a major internal revolution as this impacts on its structural organisation. Already prevalent in many institutions internationally, this third academic mission has begun to pose troubling challenges to existing academic research cultures and systems in South Africa.

In Volume 1 of this two-volume publication, the authors review the international literature on urbanisation. They locate urbanisation in broader social transformations, study the role of households in the process of migration and discuss theories of migration. They also provide a survey of the history of urbanisation and planning in Latin America.

In Volume 2 of this two-volume publication, the authors identify the appropriate planning approaches to urbanisation and their main social implications. Based on an extensive literature study, the issue of planning for urbanisation was investigated and a comprehensive review of the debate on urban land and housing is provided.
